Middle School Director’s Feedback
Music classes tend to be very large. It is incredibly helpful to the middle school teacher to be able to divide students into smaller groups and send them with a high school musician for more individualized attention. Middle School students not only get a smaller teacher to student ratio, but are able to interact with other musicians. This gives them a vision of the possibilities in their future as they look forward to being a high school student in a leadership position that visits their former middle school.
As for the high school students who are volunteering their time to coach, they are learning valuable leadership skills, learning how to work with others specifically those that are younger, and have less experienced skill sets). In addition, they are helping plant and water seeds that they can actually see the results from in a couple years. The middle school students will soon be their fellow high school colleagues. This makes the high school student an integral part of the high school music program where what they do affects them in a timely fashion.
Lastly, middle school students love any chance they get with "older" high school students. They see them as "cool" and "fun" and that energy get translated back into the classroom. That's something everyone gets excited about.
