PATRICK HENRY BAND & COLOR GUARD LETTERS
Becoming eligible for a letter in Instrumental Music or Color Guard is equivalent to achieving a varsity level in performance and experience in music or color guard.
- An initial letter can be earned in two ways:
1. A student earns 65 points during their first 2 full years in the I.M. Program.
-or- 2. A student earns 50 points in their first full year in the I. M. Program.
- A 2nd, 3rd or 4th year letter can be achieved by earning 50 points during a single school year.
Each student is responsible for maintaining his/her own record of points earned under the monitoring of the Band Vice President and the Director.

- Letter points for fundraisers are only allowed for attendance at general fundraisers, not personal fundraisers.

- To receive points for Band & Color Guard Council Membership, the member must attend at least 75% of the scheduled meetings.
- In School Activities that help Band or Color Guard might include being on the year book or school newspaper staff, being on ASB, etc.
- Out of school activities acceptable for consideration might include outside of school performance group, performing at church, performing with a dance group, etc.
- Points for Honor Organizations are earned only if the student is performing as a representative of Patrick Henry High School.
- Students will have letter points deducted for unexcused absences, multiple tardies and/or behavior issues, etc.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT STUDENT LEADERSHIP GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES -
1. Set a good example of and for the entire band & color guard. 2. Promote positive band and color guard spirit, morale, support of each other, and comradery when ever and where ever possible. 3. Assist in monitoring and enforcing the rules and regulations of PHHS and the PHHS Instrumental Music Department at all practices, performances & events. 4. Act as a spokesperson for the Instrumental Music Department within the school and community. 5. Make concerns regarding the Instrumental Music program known to the directors and instructors. 6. Keep the directors and/or instructors informed of band and/or color guard activities that they might not be aware of. 7. Assist the directors, instructors and other peer members whenever possible. 8. Plan social functions outside the school day with the director’s approval. (You should have at least two or three functions per semester) 9. All members of student leadership must be on top of their music and academics. 10. Attend all student leadership meetings. 11. All members of the council must maintain at least a 3.00 GPA. If a member falls below a 3.00 for a grading period, they will be on probation. If GPA is consistently low, council member will be removed from their leadership position. 12. To qualify for leadership positions, candidates for the following roles must attend a Summer leadership camp, either California Leadership Academy or USA Drum Major prior to the Marching Patriots Workshop: President, Drum Major, Assistant Drum Major, Color Guard Captain. All other council members are strongly encouraged to attend the California Leadership Academy.
- QUALIFICATIONS - In order to qualify, a student must:
1. Be willing to set a good example of and for the entire Instrumental Music Department. 2. Be willing to promote positive spirit, morale, support of each other, and camaraderie when ever and where ever possible. 3. Be willing to carry out all provisions of the Patrick Henry Band & Color Guard Handbook. 4. Do your best and always give your best effort. 5. Refrain from participation in any illegal activity that would embarrass or cause negative publicity to you, PHHS Instrumental Music Department and Patrick Henry High School. 6. Abide by all rules and regulations of Patrick Henry High School and San Diego Unified School District. 7. All nominees must be current Instrumental Music members in good standing. 8. Have at least a 3.00 GPA. 9. To run for President, student must have held a previous position on student leadership
